Abstract

The 14 Aspects of the MECA Framework for putting Social Sustainability in Organizations in concrete terms

So far, the social dimension of sustainability is inadequately defined at the organizational level. It lacks concrete ideas of what objectives should be pursued in this area. Without putting it sufficiently in concrete terms, it is difficult to identify purposeful indicators and identify as well as exploit the potential of this dimension. In this article, a Modified Extended Capability Approach (MECA) is presented for discussion to serve as a guideline and definition for the social sustainability of organizations. The Capability Approach of Nussbaum (2003, 2010), which describes a good life, has been extended for this purpose to the aspects of "Future Generations", "Improvement", "Law" and "Culture Diversity". It was subsequently modified to apply to all organizations. MECA was then compared with three selected sustainability assessment systems to identify gaps and potentials of the social dimension of sustainability. The employee satisfaction indicator, if gathered properly, can make a major contribution to closing the identified gaps.
